Altered Airstream Kent Baton

The Kent Cultural Baton is a mobile public artwork which will result in the creation of an alternative cultural map of Kent.
Inspired by the first ordnance survey map of Kent produced in 1801, the Baton will research and chart the unknown or hidden cultural aspects of Kent. From 2010 to 2012 the Baton will travel around Kent, discovering, collecting, and reflecting its location wherever it visits. At each location there will be a series of artist led workshops and events, which will invite visitors to engage with the Baton and contribute to the map. These events aim to gather significant stories and images that relate to places, people and folklore. The stories collected throughout the Baton’s journey will be continually updated to this website, so that gradually a new map of Kent can be created – the final version of which will be publicised on completion of the project.
The Baton is made from the base of a 1950’s Bubble Airstream with a side opening, stage and a periscope that will serve as a temporary exhibition and workshop space. The Baton will reflect its locations both literally, with its polished aluminium surface, and metaphorically by the sights, sounds and stories that it collects. The Baton embodies creative discovery. The target is to create an alternative map of Kent revealing that which is currently hidden on traditional maps and guides to Kent.
Led by Kent County Council, the Kent Cultural Baton Board has commissioned a unique, original artwork designed by Nicole Mollett that will tour Kent in the period leading up to the London 2012 Games to promote Kent’s cultural offer and celebrate both British and International culture.
